Non-surgical treatment

Monitor and control, or even halt hair loss before it progresses further

Not every patient who comes to us for consultation is suitable, or ready, for FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) surgery, for a variety of reasons. The most common reason is that analysis of the hair and scalp reveals that hair loss has not yet stabilized – meaning that it has not yet stopped thinning or shedding. While that may feel frustrating for patients who want to proceed with surgical treatment right away, there is a positive to take away. By beginning medical treatment under supervision at the clinic, you can find that routine analysis will allow you to monitor and control or in some cases, even halt hair loss before it progresses further. In many patients, alternative medical treatment under Kensington Hair Clinic supervision also allows them to prepare for hair transplantation surgery when the hair loss is stabilised and/or predictable, so that we can determine the number of follicle unit grafts necessary and which procedure will be best – it is important to remember that not all procedures are right for every patient, which may stem from lifestyle or environmental factors as well as the hair’s overall condition.

We only offer treatment with proven results

We at the Kensington Hair Clinic pride ourselves in offering only the gold standard of non-surgical hair restoration treatments. While many other clinics try to persuade patients that expensive new techniques and supplements can reduce or stop hair thinning, we know our patients have, more often than not, been promised results from products and treatments that frequently fail to deliver. We therefore only offer the best in non-surgical hair restoration treatment and monitor our patients to ensure they are receiving the best follow-up care, and to determine the optimal conditions for additional treatment.

Finasteride non-surgical hair restoration

Finasteride (or Propecia®) is a 1 mg oral tablet which is taken daily, and which blocks the conversion of testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), in order to decrease DHT levels by up to 70%. In blocking the conversion of DHT, Finasteride can stop hair loss and encourage re-growth, with the greatest effects on the crown and mid-scalp areas, but significant effect in the frontal hairline area as well.

Like any treatment, patients should be aware of some issues – for example, a person may develop a tolerance to the drug, meaning that the effects of Finasteride wear off over time, so at some point, another means of treating the condition may require consideration. Side effects can include a decrease in libido, however, studies have shown only a 0.5% higher incidence of erectile dysfunction when compared to placebo. Recent scientific studies have demonstrated that the drug has no effect on fertility where there is no previous history of diminished fertility. However, those with prior history may be affected.

There has been some scientific evidence (at the time of writing, there is one study) to suggest the drug caused a 25% decrease in mild to moderate Prostate cancer (Gleason 1 to 6) and a 1.3% increase in Gleason 7 to 10. Leading urologists, however, attribute this to higher specificity in prostate biopsy due to the smaller prostate volume in patients taking Finasteride long term.

Minoxidil non-surgical hair restoration

Minoxidil is a topical solution for men and women, which is applied directly to the scalp. There is a significant amount of evidence that the drug, which acts as a direct anlagen-prolonging agent, is proven to either reduce hair loss or promote hair growth in about 80% of patients.

Many patients may have heard negative feedback about Minoxidil, however, this refers to the original product, which has not been commonly used for some time. The problems were that the treatment was oily and messy, and the propylene glycol additive could cause irritation in some patients. It is now also available as a 5% foam without any propylene glycol, and so is much easier to use.
