Young men and hair loss

We provide a sensitive and thorough approach to your hair restoration.

The early-onset of thinning hair can herald feelings of anxiety and low confidence that worsen as hair continues to thin. Thinning hair can appear from the onset of puberty and in many young men.

Male Pattern Baldness (also known as MPB), or androgenetic alopecia, affects 70% of men at some point in their lives. And 90% of hair loss in men occurs when susceptible hair follicles are exposed to the androgen (male hormone) Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, a metabolite of testosterone which causes the hair to become finer and shorter with each growth cycle and results in a thinning effect that eventually becomes permanent hair loss.

Whilst lifestyle and environmental factors can contribute to or accelerate hair loss – such as stress, smoking, poor nutrition and exposure to UV or chemicals – the most common reason for hair loss in men is genetics.

It’s familiar pattern causes a recession in the front of the hairline and thinning and patchiness in the crown and on the top of the scalp. This is due to the location of hair follicles with receptors to male hormones known as androgens being bound to DHT, whereas hair follicles lacking these androgen receptors are located on the sides and at the back of the scalp.

A long-term investment

The main concern for younger men experiencing hair thinning or the early stages of MPB is its relative unpredictability – hair loss may follow a pattern, but each man’s experience is completely unique. Rates of hair loss can vary tremendously from young person to young person, between brothers and even twins.

There are different approaches and schools of thought on treating younger men with androgenetic alopecia. Whilst some prefer a ‘wait and see’ approach, those with minimal recession may want to opt for non-surgical medical treatment.

Others choose to combat the early onset of MPB with hair transplant surgery to blend hair taken from Safe Donor Areas with hair that may be susceptible to androgenetic alopecia. Keeping your hair transplant more discreet whilst being monitored during aftercare by specialists who will evaluate the quality of your hair and advise how to proceed should your hair loss continue.
