Follicular Unit Transplants (FUT)
An evolutionary advance from hair transplant surgeries of the past
Follicular Unit Transplant, or FUT, is a surgical technique where hair follicles are harvested from donor areas in one or more strips – which, in longer hairstyles are barely visible due to the incisions’ carefully beveled edge. It allows hair to grow through the scar making it almost impossible to see.
FUT: A more dramatic hair restoration surgery?
In this procedure, the surgeon removes a “strip” from the donor area. The follicle / grafts are then harvested and transplanted into the recipient area. Thousands of grafts may be transplanted in a single session.
FUT is seen as an evolutionary advance from the hair transplantation surgeries of the past, which used larger grafts and produced an unnatural, ‘plug’ type look.
Historically, FUT has been more affordable than Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), because the surgeon spends more time extracting follicles one by one in FUE and not because one procedure offers better results.
What to expect from FUT treatment at Kensington Hair Clinic
A typical FUT surgery transplanting an average 2,000 follicle units take between 7-9 hours. Some patients may need more – 3,000 units require between 9-10 hours in a theatre. Larger procedures are almost always carried out over two days. Combination surgeries frequently require a second day.
FUT surgery leaves a ‘strip’ of scar tissue, which is fully healed – and virtually undetectable – after seven weeks. Many patients’ scarring is unnoticeable without close inspection, and the confidence boost from the treatment is well worth the minimal scarring.
Watch the video below. It is an FUT patient after seven weeks. If you look very carefully you can just make out the linear scar.

There are many options for successful hair restoration
The Kensington Hair Clinics’ experts fully assess each individual patient’s hair and scalp, as some may not be suitable candidates for FUT, but may be better treated either with FUE, with a combination of surgeries, or non-surgically.
