Will I have a full head of hair after a hair transplant?

Welcome back to Kensington Hair Clinic Insights with me Trevor Burnham.

“If I have the hair transplant will I have a full head of hair?” is a question that we get asked often here at our London based hair transplant clinic. The simple answer is that there’ll be certain variables that will determine whether or not it’s possible to have a full head of hair. If your expectations are that you have the full head of hair that you had prior to your hair loss that’s likely to be unrealistic. The two main factors that would determine the answer to this question would be how much hair have you lost on top and how much available hair do you have in your donor area.

The donor area is generally the back and the sides of the head. If you’ve lost all of the hair on top, for example advanced hair loss maybe now six or seven on the Norwood scale then realistically it would not be possible to do one hair transplant safely to remove enough hair from your donor area and give give you full coverage front to back in one surgery.  The Norwood Scale (or Hamilton-Norwood scale) is the main classification system used to measure the scale of male pattern baldness.

Normally with advanced hair loss cases you’d need to consider two separate procedures to get the best results. The first procedure would be to remove approximately 2000 to 3,000 grafts to cover your front and midsection. The second procedure which you could consider approximately 6 to 8 months after the first would be to cover the area at the back of the head, the crown area. Advanced hair loss cases are dependent on the donor area and the hair available at the back. Two procedures should give you a reasonable amount of coverage, but again the expectations need to be real realistic. You can have a lot more hair with a hair transplant but we can’t give you the full head of hair that you would have had prior to hair loss. Other options that may effect the results are non-surgical such as medications to maintain any existing hair that you have and then of course if you add to that the hair transplant procedure you will get the best possible outcome.
